Energy-efficient sterilization-UV and Berkey Water Purifier Update

May 16th, 2009

(1) Update on cistern growth problem, Energy-efficient sterilization, UV

A berkey water filter with filter out E. coli, and pretty much anything else you can find in raw water.

We use one for rain and river water.

(2) North Country Energy Fair

We had a great time at the North Country Energy Fair. We had about 20 people attend our “DIY Solar class”, 10 at our “Make your own biodiesel” class, and about 50 attend the off-grid water pumping and filtration class we presented with a panel of 4 others, including Jim Juczak of Woodhenge and Rob Roy of Earthwood. Rich Douglas covered wind pumping, Jim covered deep well hand pumps, I covered filtration, John covered solar pumps and Luke Martin covered well buckets. Rob’s presentation covered pedal powered piston pumps. We gave about 30 rides on our E-Zip electric bike, and everyone had a lot of fun with it. Our DIY
Berkey Water Purifier was a big hit, as was the Nature’s Head composting toilet, and the MRSA and Swine flu resistant cleaning products. Tom Leue presented his Yellowheat veggie furnace.

Water Storage Heat Exchangers Ideas

May 12th, 2009

Some ideas from “thomas holt”

He has been in heavy equipment for about 10 years. He knows that many of the large construction aggregate companies have a precast division. He believes that the water storage system can be utilitized for the heating and cooling of the home either with hydronics or some other similar application. The combination of passive solar energy and solar obsorption panels used in conjunction with a rain water storage containment system is a real possibility and may be put into action. High Amount of Sulpate in RO feed water

May 4th, 2009

There is an issue of RO (reverse osmosis) feed water that is described below:

Dear All
We are facingthe problem of high sulphate in feed water (tds 9500 so4-9000 ppm)We have to install a RO plant. please guide us how to solve this problem

You may use an anionic exchange resin or precipitation with a barium salt.

Rain Water Storage / Passive Heat Exchange Storage System

May 1st, 2009

Here is a thought about rain water storage:

Thought #1: thomas holt

I’m interested in rain water storage / passive heat exchange storage system. Being very new to the concept, I had thought about the idea while I was visiting the local solar depot in sacramento california. I have been in heavy equipment for about 10 years. Many of the large construction aggregate companies have a precast division. I believe that the water storage system can be utilitized for the heating and cooling of the home either with hydronics or some other similar application.

The combination of passive solar energy and solar obsorption panels used in conjunction with a rain water storage containment system is a real possibility in my thoughts. I am interested in green construction practices and having the storage system is a good start by saving the natural resources, however, I believe there is so much more that it can be used for than simply water storage alone. I watched a program on the television last evening where one of the universities had incorporated a heat exchanger with copper tubing (radiator) which heated the space. The heating and cooling of stored water used in the right way could potentially create a viable way of heating and cooling the home in winter and summer months. I am asking those who read this to respond and relay their idea’s and thoughts about these possibilities.

Thought #2 From: Rob Crook

What are you talking about is a water sourced heat pump. There are a lot of them on the market and the seer ratings on them are very high. The calculation that you need to perform on the system is the heat load of the building and the number of gallons in the cistern and how fast the water is going to heat up or cool down. The temperature can vary but there are energy efficiencies to consider.

RO for Brackish Water

April 25th, 2009

These are inputs about how to treat brackish water:

I have an underground brackish water with a volume of more than 5000 cubic meter and I want to sell it to a water district. The salinity of the brackish water is 12 ppt. Can anybody tell me, if it will be feasible to do reverse osmosis on this brackish water for potable water supply. Can you give me a percentage yield and may be some data that I can use for economic presentation of my proposal.

You have to run the propertary software of some of the membrane manufacturers and check what can be do with that water

Water Conservation Tips

April 18th, 2009

Rain water harvesting is a great way to save water. In fact, presently various regions across the globe are facing fresh water shortages and hence are resorting to various ways of water conservation. Southern California is also going through a similar situation of fresh water shortage. As a result rain water harvesting plays a crucial role in saving fresh water for the region. There are some other simple ways of water conservation as well, which you can undertake at your home. These are: http://www.bewaterwise.com/tips01.html

Southern Californians got to make a conscious effort to save water in order to combat this water shortage situation. Please spread the awareness among friends and family.

Technologies for harnessing solar energy

March 4th, 2009

Harnessing the sun’s energy efficiently is not an easy feat. The sunlight is so widespread that finding the most effective way of capturing it requires advanced knowledge and technology. There are several technologies for utilizing solar energy and all are unique and are dedicated for specific applications. Read the rest of this entry »
